“Ashram culture is going to be a panacea for the people of this modern era
because it will provide them with a positive environment to explore that seed of creativity
which is dormant within them.”
– Paramhamsa Swami Satyananda
The past few years have seen a tremendous change in people’s views and attitudes
towards yoga. This was envisioned by Pujya Guru Dev Paramahamsa Swami Satyananda Saraswati where decades ago he said, ‘Yoga is the heritage of the past and the culture of tomorrow’. Shiv Darshan Yoga Vidyalaya stands as a shining legacy of this vision. Our Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has been instrumental in highlighting the importance of yoga. The need of yoga in achieving a balanced personal and societal life is now being understood.
Shiv Darshan Yoga Vidyalaya, was founded on July 14th, 1992 on the auspicious day of Guru Poornima by the grace of Pujya Guru Dev Paramahamsa Satyananda and registered on Oct 28th 1992 with the great help of Swami Vajrapani Saraswati, the senior most sanyasi of Bihar school of Yoga. The new Ashram building in Chennai was inaugurated by Paramacharya Swami Niranjananda Saraswati of Bihar School of Yoga on August 1, 1999 .
Shiv Darshan Yoga Vidyalaya is a non-profitable charitable trust run by group of trustees and headed by Swami Vajrapani Saraswati (Founder) and Swami Gambhirananda Saraswati(Acharya)
In this fast-paced world, people are losing touch with a balanced, traditional way of life, and are finding comfort in junk foods, mindless entertainment, and overindulgence of senses. The ashram strives to instil and develop personal values, harmony, and mindful living through asanas, relaxation techniques and meditation. On every auspicious day, the ashram through it’s activities bring about togetherness and enlivens the spirit of the people.
In order to create trainers and therapists who are proficient in traditional yogic methods and have a scientific understanding of diseases, the ashram conducts Teachers Training programme in Yoga Therapy at regular intervals. The first batch of Yoga Teacher Training was conducted in 1997 and continues till date. This programme continues to be popular among students who pursue yoga academically as well as the general public who wish to learn and apply yogic approach towards disease prevention and cure.
Swami Vajrapani Saraswati and Swami Gambhirananda Saraswati of Shiv Darshan Yoga Vidyalaya have been invited as speakers to various seminars, yoga workshops, and yoga and health camps held at various universities, schools and private institutions across India.
Both the Swamis have spearheaded social initiatives such as personality development courses for children, medical checkups, relaxation and meditation workshops (Yoga Nidra, Chakra Meditation, Trataka, Ajapa Japa sessions), stress management through yoga, and field trips to Thiruvannamalai Ashram. The ashram over the past years has taken several efforts to conduct programmes to meet the needs of various segments of society.
During 11th to 20th July 2005, about 400 village health nurses were trained to offer health care solutions through yogic practice. During August 2012, yoga training was given to children of various Vivekananda Schools at Chennai.
Swami Vajrapani Saraswati is the founder of the establishment and Swami Gambhirananda Saraswati is the Acharya and holds the chair of managing trustee.
Both Swami Vajrapaniji and Swami Gambhiranandaji are direct disciples of Paramhamsa Swami Satyananda Saraswati and. They were honoured with the title ‘Golden Swamiji’ at the World Yoga Convention held at Bihar School of Yoga, Munger in 2013.
