Yoga on a Moving Train: A Journey Transformed

A 36-hour train journey from Ayodhya to Chennai via Varanasi sounded like a test of patience. The long hours, constant rattling, and lack of excitement made it feel like an endless stretch of boredom—until something unexpected happened. Somewhere between Varanasi and Chennai, the dullness of the journey was broken by a spark of energy from a young girl named Sandhya, just 10 years old. Inspired by the words of our senior Swamiji, Vajrapani, she eagerly accepted his playful challenge: perform a yoga pose on the moving train and earn ₹1 for every second she could hold it.

Sandhya chose the Ekapada Pranamasana—a one-legged prayer pose. As she balanced herself, a few shaky seconds turned into steady stillness. Curious children gathered around her, counting aloud with excitement—10, 20, 30… The atmosphere shifted. Boredom gave way to cheers and laughter. To everyone’s surprise, Sandhya held the pose for 100 seconds and proudly earned ₹100. Inspired, other children lined up to take the challenge. What began as a simple game became a spontaneous yoga competition. Poses like Baddha Padmasana, Garbhasana, and Parvatasana were demonstrated with focus and joy, drawing attention even from passengers in other compartments. A funny moment came when a five-year-old boy attempted Paschimottanasana (forward bend). He barely reached his toes, prompting light-hearted laughter as someone joked it was because of his round belly—”just like his dad’s!” As the cheerful chaos grew louder, I gently requested the kids to observe three minutes of silence. To my amazement, what was meant to be a brief moment of calm extended beyond five minutes. All the children sat in stillness, meditating together as if the train itself had paused in time. What could’ve been just another tiring train ride turned into a memorable, fun-filled experience—proof that with the right motivation, children can turn even a moving train into a stage for creativity, discipline, and joy.
